At Penzance Gymnastics Club we run an in-house Leadership Programme for aspiring coaches from age 11 upwards – building confidence, people skills and real coaching experience in a supportive, professional environment.

Leadership Pathway

Grow from gymnast to coach

Our Leadership Programme provides a structured pathway for young people who are passionate about gymnastics, sport and working with others. Leaders progress through two tiers, building real coaching skills on the gym floor with guidance from our experienced team.

A bespoke programme designed specifically for Penzance Gymnastics Club, aligned with our values, coaching standards and safeguarding policies.

Leaders develop communication, teamwork and confidence by supporting coaches, engaging with gymnasts and being a friendly, trusted presence in the gym.

Pathway to paid coaching
At 16, Young Leaders can be supported onto a British Gymnastics Level 1 coaching qualification, leading to paid employment and a long-term coaching future.
Leadership Tiers

Mini Leaders & Young Leaders

Our two-tier system supports aspiring coaches from age 11, giving them appropriate responsibilities at each stage while keeping gymnasts safe and sessions high quality.

Tier 1 · Mini Leaders

Mini Leaders 11–13 yrs

Recreational support · Early leadership

Mini Leaders is our programme for the youngest aspiring coaches. Working alongside our coaching team in Recreational Gymnastics sessions, Mini Leaders:

  • Join in leading warm ups and cool downs
  • Demonstrate techniques and skills on apparatus
  • Act as a friendly, reassuring face for younger gymnasts
  • Support coaches with basic tasks around the gym

Each Mini Leader completes a logbook to record their skills, reflections and progress, ready to step up into the Young Leaders programme at age 14.

Tier 2 · Young Leaders

Young Leaders 14–16 yrs

Coaching pathway · Increased responsibility

Young Leaders continue the journey started as Mini Leaders and move closer to becoming fully qualified coaches. In Recreational & Advanced Recreational classes, Young Leaders:

  • Lead warm ups and cool downs with coach support
  • Demonstrate and coach skills on apparatus
  • Take more ownership of small groups and stations
  • Develop awareness of safety, spotting and class management

Once they turn 16 yrs old, we look to support suitable Young Leaders onto a British Gymnastics Level 1 coaching qualification and into paid employment in the club.

Next Steps

From Leader to Coach

16+ yrs · British Gymnastics pathway

At 16, suitable Young Leaders may be invited to complete a British Gymnastics Level 1 coaching qualification. This provides:

  • Nationally recognised coaching qualification
  • Insurance and safeguarding training
  • Opportunities for paid employment at PZGC
  • A clear route into a future career in sport and coaching

Many of our current coaches started in this programme, growing from gymnasts to leaders and now to qualified, inspirational role models on the gym floor.

Directions

By car: Located just off the A30 at Long Rock. Follow signs for Questmap Business Park – free on-site parking is available for members.

By train: Nearest station is Penzance. From there you can take a short bus or taxi ride to Long Rock Industrial Estate.

By bus: Local services stop on the main road through Long Rock – it’s a short walk from the bus stop to the Business Park.
